Minnesota is the Nation’s “Most Caring State”
The United Way published a study in Nov. 2000 declaring Minnesota the Nation’s ‘Most Caring State.’
“It’s the most comprehensive indication of quality of life in a community and the engagement of the citizenry in creating that quality of life.” said United Way President Betty Beene from Washington D.C. Some of the reasons the state ranked so high were good statistics on voting and charitable giving levels. The state was second in voter turnout, third in per-capita United Way contributions, and a reported 74 percent increase in support for nonprofit groups over 10 years. Statistics for the State of Caring Index were collected mostly from government agencies but also included data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the United Way itself.
In November, 2001, Minnesota won the honor for a second time. The second report is based on 1999 data.
